Best time to visit Tanzania for Safari

The best time to visit Tanzania depends on what you expect from your safari. Not all months offer the same safari experience — in some periods wildlife is easy to see, in others it requires more patience. Tanzania is a year-round destination, but wildlife visibility, landscapes, and overall experience change significantly throughout the year. Some periods offer easier wildlife viewing, others fewer tourists or greener scenery. Understanding these differences helps you choose the best time to visit Tanzania for safari based on your priorities  — explore our Tanzania safari tours.

Best Time to Visit Tanzania (Quick Answer)

Here’s a simple breakdown based on what most travelers are looking for:

  • Best overall time → June to October
  • Best for wildlife viewing → June to October
  • Best for the Great Migration (river crossings) → June to August
  • Best for calving season (baby animals & predator activity) → January to February
  • Best for fewer tourists → November to March
  • Best for green landscapes → November

Tanzania Safari Seasons Explained

Tanzania safari seasons are usually divided into dry and rainy periods, but in reality, they are less predictable than they used to be. In recent years, rain can appear during the dry season, and dry periods can happen during the rainy season. This is why planning a safari in Tanzania always requires some flexibility.

A general pattern still helps when planning your trip:
  • Dry season (June to October) → best wildlife visibility
  • Short rains (November) → brief showers, usually not disruptive
  • Green season (December to February) → lush landscapes and good safari conditions
  • Long rains (March to May) → heavier rainfall and more travel limitations

June to October — Dry Season & Best Time for Safari

This is the easiest and most reliable time for safari in Tanzania, especially for first-time visitors. During the dry season:

  • Vegetation is thinner, making animals easier to spot
  • Wildlife gathers around water sources
  • Conditions are stable and predictable for travel

This is also the most popular period for those wondering when to visit Tanzania for safari. This is also the period when the Great Migration moves towards the northern part of the Serengeti ecosystem, best experienced on a Serengeti safari and river crossings can happen between June and August. However, crossings are not guaranteed — they depend on timing, rainfall, and herd movement.

At the same time: this is also peak season, which means more vehicles and tourists in popular areas.

January to February — Calving Season Across Tanzania (Peak in Southern Serengeti & Ndutu Area)

This period marks the calving season across Tanzania and is one of the best times to see baby animals on safari, when many animals give birth — including wildebeest, zebras, and impalas. You can experience this in multiple national parks, not only in the Serengeti ecosystem.

What makes the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu area different is the scale. This is where the Great Migration herds are usually concentrated at this time, so the number of newborn animals is significantly higher, making the experience more intense from a wildlife perspective.

What this means for your safari:

  • High chances of seeing newborn animals
  • Increased predator activity
  • Open landscapes with relatively good visibility

This is not a “gentle” wildlife experience — it’s raw nature, where births and hunts happen side by side.

The exact location of the herds depends on rainfall, so movement can vary year to year. Access conditions in the Ndutu area can also change, especially after rains, so flexibility is important.

November to March — Green Season & Fewer Crowds

This period offers a different type of safari experience compared to the dry season and is often overlooked when deciding when to visit Tanzania.

  • November brings short rains, usually brief and often in the morning
  • Landscapes turn green quickly after the dry months
  • There are noticeably fewer tourists

Wildlife viewing is still good, but less predictable. Animals are more spread out and vegetation is thicker.

This is a good option if you prefer a quieter safari — private safari tours in Tanzania and don’t mind more variable conditions.

March to May — Rainy Season (Low Season)

This is generally not considered the best time for safari in Tanzania.
  • Heavy rains can affect road conditions
  • Some areas may become difficult or impossible to access
  • Travel plans may need to change depending on weather

Because of these risks, we generally do not operate safaris during this period.

Mikumi National Park safari is one of the few exceptions, as it can be reached via asphalt road and some areas remain accessible even during the rainy season.

However, in practice, wildlife viewing can be limited. During rains, animals tend to avoid wet grass and muddy areas, often moving to drier locations that are harder to access.

So while reaching the park is technically possible, the chances of consistently good wildlife sightings are lower.
