1-Day Materuni Waterfall, Coffee & Chaga Experience from Arusha

A Day of Walking, Local Culture & Mountain Landscapes

  • Looking for a longer Northern Tanzania safari? → Explore our 5-Day Serengeti & Northern Circuit Tanzania Safari for a classic combination of Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti.
  • Looking for a shorter safari from Arusha? → Explore our 3-Day Serengeti Safari focused on Serengeti wildlife and the Great Migration (seasonal).

Your 1-Day Materuni Waterfall & Coffee Experience

Arusha to Materuni Village & Back

Depart from your hotel in Arusha and drive to Moshi, approximately 1 hour away. From Moshi, continue for another hour to Materuni Village, located on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. On arrival, meet your local Chaga guide and explore Materuni Village, learning about the traditional way of life, local culture and the Chaga community.

From the village, begin an approximately 1-hour walk to Materuni Waterfall, passing through the surrounding countryside and coffee and banana plantations. The walk is suitable for different fitness levels and can be taken at a comfortable pace.

After visiting the waterfall, walk back to the village, where you will enjoy a traditional Chaga lunch prepared with local ingredients. The experience continues with a coffee experience, where you can learn about the traditional process of preparing coffee and enjoy freshly prepared local coffee.

After the visit, return to your vehicle and drive back to Arusha, arriving in the afternoon or early evening.

This experience is planned based on real routes, timing, and on-the-ground experience — so everything runs as expected.

About Materuni Village, Waterfall & Chaga Culture

Materuni Waterfall
Materuni Waterfall is a scenic waterfall on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, surrounded by lush vegetation, coffee and banana plantations. The walk to the waterfall passes through the countryside around Materuni Village, offering a chance to experience a greener and very different side of northern Tanzania beyond the usual safari landscapes.

Chaga Culture & Coffee
The Chaga are the traditional people of the Kilimanjaro area, whose communities have long lived on the fertile slopes of the mountain. Coffee and bananas are important parts of local agriculture and everyday life, and the Materuni experience offers an opportunity to learn directly from a local Chaga guide about village life, farming traditions and the traditional preparation of coffee.
