2-Day Mkomazi National Park Safari from Arusha

Black Rhinos, Wild Dogs & Wild Tanzania

This 2-day Tanzania safari from Arusha takes you to Mkomazi National Park, home to black rhinos and one of Tanzania’s lesser-visited wilderness destinations. Although the park is only about four hours from Arusha, its low visitor numbers and isolated landscapes give a Mkomazi safari a very different feel from Tanzania’s better-known safari destinations.

Mkomazi is particularly special for its black rhino sanctuary and African wild dog conservation programme, while its semi-arid savannah, mountains and open landscapes offer a distinctive safari experience.

Mkomazi is home to a variety of wildlife, including giraffes, zebras, elephants, buffaloes, lions and leopards. With some luck, you may even encounter all of Africa’s Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhino — during your safari.

The safari includes an afternoon game drive on Day 1, an early morning game drive and a visit to the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary on Day 2

June to December is particularly recommended, when wildlife is more likely to concentrate around the park’s remaining water sources.

This is a private safari starting and ending in Arusha, with an overnight stay inside Mkomazi National Park. On request, the safari can also start or end in Moshi, as the route to Mkomazi passes through Moshi.

→ A short safari for travelers who want rare wildlife, fewer visitors and a genuine wilderness experience.

Why staying inside Mkomazi matters

Staying overnight inside Mkomazi National Park means you can be in the park for the most important wildlife-viewing hours — late afternoon, sunset and early morning — without losing time on a long drive back to accommodation outside the park. It also allows you to experience Mkomazi when the park is quiet, before the day’s activities begin.

→ More time in the wilderness, fewer visitors and better access to the park’s most active hours.

Mkomazi National Park & Wildlife

Mkomazi National Park is a vast semi-arid wilderness in northern Tanzania, known for its open savannah, mountains and relatively low visitor numbers. The park is home to black rhinos and African wild dogs, as well as elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes and other wildlife.

With some luck, you may even encounter all of Africa’s Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhino during your safari.

The Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary is a protected area within the park established to protect and breed black rhinos. A visit offers an opportunity to see these rare animals and learn more about efforts to protect one of Africa’s most endangered large mammals.

Mkomazi is also an important area for African wild dog conservation. Sightings in the wild are never guaranteed, but the park provides habitat for this highly endangered predator.

The combination of rare wildlife, open wilderness and relatively few visitors makes Mkomazi particularly appealing to travelers looking for a quieter and less conventional Tanzania safari experience.

June to December is particularly recommended for wildlife viewing, as animals are more likely to concentrate around the remaining water sources during the drier months.
