Tarangire Savannah, Ngorongoro Crater & the Cultures of the Hadzabe, Datoga & Maasai  

This 3-day Tanzania safari from Arusha combines three very different experiences in northern Tanzania — wildlife in Tarangire, the extraordinary landscape and wildlife of the Ngorongoro Crater, and encounters with three traditional communities: the Hadzabe, Datoga and Maasai.

The safari begins in Tarangire National Park, where open savannah, ancient baobabs and large elephant herds offer a classic introduction to northern Tanzania’s wildlife. From there, the journey continues to the Ngorongoro Crater, a unique volcanic caldera and one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife areas, where a lucky day can bring sightings of all of the Big Five.

The third day moves beyond wildlife into living Tanzanian cultures, with visits to traditional villages of the Hadzabe, Datoga and Maasai. The Hadzabe are traditionally hunter-gatherers, while the Datoga and Maasai are traditionally pastoralist communities. Each offers a different perspective on life, traditions and skills — from the Hadzabe’s hunting and gathering traditions to the Datoga’s metalworking and the Maasai’s livestock-based way of life.

3-day safari itinerary


Day 1 – Arusha to Tarangire National Park & Karatu

Your safari begins with pick-up from your hotel in Arusha. The departure time is flexible — you can leave very early and arrive at Tarangire National Park around sunrise, or have breakfast first and arrive later in the morning.

The drive from Arusha to Tarangire takes approximately 2 hours. Spend the day on a game drive in the park, with a picnic lunch at one of Tarangire’s designated picnic sites.

In the late afternoon, leave Tarangire and drive approximately 2 hours to Karatu, where you will stay near the entrance gates to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

 from your hotel in Dar es Salaam, where your safari from Dar es Salaam begins, followed by a drive to Mikumi National Park (approximately 6-7 hours). The journey passes through changing landscapes, local villages, and a busy highway connecting Dar es Salaam with inland regions, offering a realistic glimpse into everyday life in Tanzania. There are opportunities to stop along the way to try local fruits. Arrival at the lodge near Mikumi National Park, followed by lunch and time to relax.

In the afternoon, visit a traditional Maasai village to learn about Maasai culture, daily life, and traditions.

Day 2 – Game Drive in Mikumi National Park

After breakfast, full-day game drive in Mikumi National Park, known for its open savannah landscapes and excellent wildlife visibility. This Mikumi National Park safari offers classic safari conditions, with good chances to see lions, elephants, zebras, giraffes, and other wildlife. Picnic lunch in the park, often in scenic locations such as under a baobab tree.

Open landscapes make wildlife easier to spot compared to more forested parks.

Day 3 – Udzungwa Mountains Hiking Safari & Sanje Waterfalls

After breakfast, drive to Udzungwa Mountains National Park (approximately 2 hours). Upon arrival, begin a guided hiking safari with a park ranger through tropical rainforest. The trail leads to Sanje Waterfalls, a 170-meter-high waterfall and the largest in Tanzania (approximately 2 hours one way). After the hike, enjoy time at the waterfall, including swimming in natural pools.

A completely different safari experience, combining nature, activity, and landscape exploration.

In the evening, return to your lodge in Mikumi. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 4 – Return to Dar es Salaam

After breakfast, drive back to Dar es Salaam (approximately 6-7 hours). Lunch is included on the way.

Arrival in Dar es Salaam in the afternoon, followed by transfer to your hotel, airport, or ferry port.

About the Parks and Experiences You’ll Encounter

Mikumi National Park

A classic safari destination in southern Tanzania, known for its wide open plains framed by baobab trees and mountain backdrops. The park offers strong chances to see elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and buffaloes, with a landscape that feels open and easy to explore. Its accessibility from Dar es Salaam also makes it one of the most practical safari options.

Maasai Village Experience

A visit to a traditional Maasai village, offering insight into daily life, customs, and community structure. Rather than a performance, this is a simple and direct cultural interaction, where you can observe how the Maasai live, build, and maintain their traditions in today’s world.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park

A unique park focused on landscapes and biodiversity rather than classic game drives, with habitats ranging from tropical rainforest to mountain forest. The main experience is a guided hike through the forest to Sanje Waterfalls — the largest in Tanzania at around 170 meters — where you can swim in natural pools surrounded by dense greenery.
