Tarangire Savannah, Ngorongoro Crater & the Cultures of the Hadzabe, Datoga & Maasai  

This 3-day Tanzania safari from Arusha combines three very different experiences in northern Tanzania — wildlife in Tarangire, the extraordinary landscape and wildlife of the Ngorongoro Crater, and encounters with three traditional communities: the Hadzabe, Datoga and Maasai.

The safari begins in Tarangire National Park, where open savannah, ancient baobabs and large elephant herds offer a classic introduction to northern Tanzania’s wildlife. From there, the journey continues to the Ngorongoro Crater, a unique volcanic caldera and one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife areas, where a lucky day can bring sightings of all of the Big Five.

The third day moves beyond wildlife into living Tanzanian cultures, with experiences of Hadzabe, Datoga and Maasai traditions and ways of life. The Hadzabe are traditionally hunter-gatherers, while the Datoga and Maasai are traditionally pastoralist communities. Each offers a different perspective on life, traditions and skills — from the Hadzabe’s hunting and gathering traditions to the Datoga’s metalworking and the Maasai’s livestock-based way of life.

Behind your safari

Your safari is organised by Tanzania Safari Experts – ROM & DACE SAFARIS, a licensed Tanzanian tour operator specialising in tailor-made private safaris – from planning your itinerary to making sure everything works smoothly on the ground. Behind every safari is a local team with knowledge, experience and a deep understanding of Tanzania and its wildlife. 

Our company is led by Roman and Dace. Dace brings a European traveller’s perspective, while Roman brings deep, first-hand knowledge of Tanzania, its places and people, and how safari works on the ground. Dace and Roman do not accompany every safari – they are the people behind the company and the journeys it organises. When you are in Tanzania, they are available if you need assistance or support.

Your safari is led by our local safari driver-guides, and you travel in your own Toyota Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof.

A private safari means you do not share the vehicle with other travellers – you have your own vehicle and driver-guide, and the pace of each day can be adapted to the conditions in the wild and to your interests.  

Your safari booking starts with a conversation. Once the programme and travel dates have been agreed, the safari booking is confirmed with the first 50% payment. Once we receive it, we begin booking the accommodation and organising your safari. The remaining 50% must be paid no later than one month before the start of the safari.

About the Parks, Wildlife & Cultural Experiences

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is one of northern Tanzania’s most scenic safari destinations, known for its large elephant herds, iconic baobab trees and open savannah landscapes. The Tarangire River runs through the park and provides an important source of water for wildlife, particularly during the dry season. In 2025, Tarangire was recognized as Africa’s Leading Elephant Paradise National Park.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a protected area in northern Tanzania that includes the Ngorongoro Crater as well as surrounding highlands, plains and areas inhabited by Maasai communities. Unlike a national park, it is a multi-use conservation area where wildlife and people live alongside each other, making it an important example of wildlife conservation and traditional pastoralist life. In 2025, Ngorongoro received international recognition as Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife destinations. Its enclosed landscape supports a high concentration of wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffaloes, rhinos and other species, making it one of the places where you may have the chance to see Africa’s Big Five in a single day.

The Hadzabe are one of Tanzania’s indigenous hunter-gatherer communities, traditionally living around the Lake Eyasi area. Their traditional way of life is closely connected to the surrounding environment, with hunting, gathering and a distinct Hadzabe language and cultural traditions at its centre. The experience offers an opportunity to learn about a way of life that remains closely connected to the land.

The Datoga are traditionally pastoralists and skilled metalworkers, with livestock playing an important role in their way of life. During a visit to a traditional Datoga village, travelers can learn about their culture and community life and see traditional metalworking skills that have been passed down through generations.

The Maasai are one of Tanzania’s best-known pastoralist communities, traditionally living with and depending on livestock. A visit to a traditional Maasai village offers an insight into Maasai culture, daily life, traditions and the relationship between the community and its livestock, providing a direct cultural experience beyond the wildlife safari.
